Director Professor Mark Rainforth
Professor Mark Rainforth is the Director of the Sorby Nano Investigation Centre, he is an international expert in material science and engineering. Mark joined the University of Sheffield from the University of Leeds in 1989.
His research centres on the characterisation of metals and ceramics at high spatial resolution. Although a large body of data exists on worn surface microstructures, virtually all of it comes from qualitative optical and SEM observations. He is well known for his work on materials characterisation using advanced techniques, in particular, high resolution electron microscopy (HREM), electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI), nanobeam chemical analysis, and magnetic force microscopy.
He is the co-author of the book Ceramic Microstructures. |

Centre Manager Dr Martin Highett
Dr. Martin I Highett is the Centre Manager of the Sorby Nano Investigation Centre. Martin has a strong background in both the academic and commercial sectors. His academic experience is predominately in the area of bioscience in which he gained expertise in optical and electron microscopy.
His commercial background comes from project management of product research and development for a biotech company as well as technical sales for a contract research organization. Martin draws on both his academic and commercial skills to deliver Sorby Nano Investigation Centre services to the commercial sectors. |

Launch Events Cooardinator Liam Hill
Liam Hill is Sorby Nano's Launch Events Cooardinator
Liam’s role at the Sorby Nano Investigation Centre is to create and produce brochures and publications to raise the awareness of the Mercury Centre. |

Research & Development Officer Dr John Hinton
Dr. John Hinton is the Research and Development Officer, he joined the Sorby Nano Investigation Centre internally from the Dept. of Engineering Materials. Before that he studied for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield and was awarded the MEng degree in 2002. He remained at the University but changed to the Dept. of Engineering Materials where his studies continued, which led to the completion of his PhD thesis in 2006. Prior to the Sorby Nano Investigation Centre, he worked as an IMMPETUS Research Associate on a commercial research project which investigated the hot working of three pipe steels.
Johns role at the Sorby Nano Investigation Centre is to consult with commercial clients on their technology needs and develop experimental work programmes to meet specific client research and development needs. |

| Technican Dr Peng Zeng
Dr Peng Zeng is the Research Officer of Sorby Centre. She completed her PhD in the Dept. of Engineering Materials at the University of Sheffield and gained experience in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) for various materials. She provides technical support for electron microscopy, which covers both the training of users and assistance in problem solving. She also carries out consultancy work for the Sorby Nano Investigation Centre. |
